The color black is representative of death and there are a few deaths that take place throughout the story, including Emily’s father, Homer, Barron and in the end, Emily. Emily has not accepted that things are changing and instead of moving along with the times and adjusting to the change of times, she has allowed herself to decay and to hold onto old systems and ideas.
